Goth Holiday: Today is Peter Murphy’s Birthday
Peter Murphy
How do you suppose the “Godfather of Goth” celebrates his 55th birthday? Do you think he sits around in one of the darkest rooms in his house sipping wine and feeling sorry for himself for getting old? Does he put on old Bauhaus records and wonder if he should have been more positive? How exactly does a goth icon celebrate middle age? (Especially one who is a Sufi and lives in Turkey.)
Does he sit around watching the opening sequence from The Hunger over and over and wonder why he doesn’t hang out with Bowie more?
Does he search YouTube to see if anybody has posted that video he did of interpretive dance to “Hollow Hills”?
Or does he reminisce about that time he toured with Nine Inch Nails and TV on the Radio, and they all covered “Final Solution” together?
However he decides to spend today celebrating his 55th birthday, Murphy should feel pretty good for a guy who is commonly thought of as Mr. Doom and Gloom: He’s bounced back from whatever illness he had that forced him to cancel his tour with Dead Can Dance’s Brendan Perry — even though doing that may have started a big time middle-aged goth rivalry. Also, he’s still putting out pretty good music, like 2011′s Ninth.
