eMUSIC RETAIL DIGITAL STARTER KIT PUTS DIGITAL MUSIC IN THE HANDS OF CONSUMERS

LAUNCHED IN STORE APRIL 23
WITH MAJOR CONSUMER ELECTRONICS RETAILER

Unusual Packaging Brings “Album” Feel to Digital Music

NEW YORK, April 24, 2006 -- eMusic, the world’s largest digital retailer of independent music, introduced brick and mortar customers to its brand with an unusual retail kit that launched on April 23 with a major consumer electronics retailer. Packed with detailed information on independent artists like Frank Zappa, Lead Belly, Spoon and more, the kit recalls the intimate feel of the record album and invites consumers to explore eMusic’s vast catalog of independent music.

More substantial than the in-store “card on a peg” offered by other digital music retailers, the eMusic retail kit is packaged with a set of eight specially designed collector’s cards on independent artists that include a taste of eMusic’s acclaimed editorial content, plus a “how-to” download guide, and detailed information about eMusic’s discovery features. The CD jewel-box size kit is priced at $14.99 and offers consumers a “starter subscription” to eMusic with 65 downloads per month plus 25 free downloads at signup.

“For consumers new to digital music – those who are buying iPods and other digital music devices – the eMusic digital starter kit offers an easy introduction to digital music, guides and encourages them to discover new artists, and to rediscover their emotional connection to music,“ said David Pakman, President and CEO of eMusic. “eMusic tracks play on any device, and we want to make sure consumers know how easy it is to load their digital players with great music – especially the music so often ignored by radio and the other vanilla music stores.”

Each collector’s card captures the rich look and feel of the eMusic Web site, and includes biographical information on the artist, key album picks, information on related artists and styles, and a flip side with eye-catching artwork adapted from the artists’ albums. This editorial information is culled from eMusic’s unrivaled expert staff of over 120 musical curators in every musical genre. In addition to Zappa, Lead Belly and Spoon, artists in the first set are Sonny Rollins, Dashboard Confessional, Bjork, Dizzee Rascal and All Saints Records.

Also in the kit is an outline of eMusic’s discovery features, including eMusic Magazine, Power Charts and the eMusic Toolbar, plus a “How-To Guide” on setting up your eMusic subscription and using eMusic on your computer or MP3 player. eMusic’s MP3 files play on any MP3 hardware device and work on all digital music players including Windows Media Player, iTunes, Winamp, Musicmatch and RealPlayer.

eMusic expects to create similar kits for other retail partners in the future. Additional collector’s cards of other artists will be added to the new versions.
