Minimal techno is usually its own reward, but it’s also been shrewdly deployed to enliven other types of music. That synergy is at work here with this brilliant single by the Karlsruhe, Germany, duo of Kristian Beyer and Frank Wiedemann, originally issued in September 2005, which snuck up on clubbers throughout the following year, becoming one of the major crossover club hits of ’06. “Rej” combines trance and minimal; its pitter-patter drums, sweep-you-away strings and connect-the-dots melody split the difference between coming up on ecstasy and descending into a haunted house.
