a true marvel

Fantastic! For someone who works in an area of music that calls for creating graphic images from musical tones, I found this album squarely hits the mark. I literally found myself transported by this music, as it opened doors into my imagination that have been closed for quite some time. Should you find yourself debating as to which album personifies 'space music' look no further, this is it. Happy trails!!

Beautiful

Mazmus

Vast, menacing, cavernous, though not necessarily in that order. Almost 'Stalker', but not quite, but still definately worth the downloads!

Deep listening

Achilles

Each track has its own drama and unique environment. This is a reward to the deep listener.

Robert Rich always delivers. This is no different, awesome vast cold virtual landscapes. Liquid Air has always been a favorite of mine, cant get enough of that track!

Ancient Gems

Returning

Below Zero is a collection and as such does not really flow like Rich's other works. However it does contain some gems. Particularly Track one 'Star Maker' which begins with Rich's trademark Siren like lamentations. The piece develops through several themes including high glacial shimmers that meld into soft slow waves becoming more insistant towards the end. I like track 5, 'Liquid Air' for it's slow choral strings and guitar like harmonics. Track 6 is also outstanding, again with those typical Rich male choral pads, distant timpany drums, mournful horns and even tolling bells. Archaic and evocotive of ancient spiritual ceremony.

They Say All Media Guide

Robert Rich has released two CDs of material from compilation discs and other formats, with Below Zero the second of these. These compositions, like those on A Troubled Resting Place, were created for the compilations and subsequent CDs in Rich’s catalog. He provides a technical explanation of his intentions on this disc, delving into thermodynamics and other heavy relationships. While it is easy to get lost in the liner notes, it is easier (and more fun) to get lost in the music. One of Rich’s better releases, the dark atmospheres are full of organic textures and experimental timbres. Deep listening is more of an event than just an experience. There are few discs that approach this level, and only the best efforts of Steve Roach, Alio Die, and Mathias Grassow rate this highly. – Jim Brenholts
