"Superb statement"

rene.leemans

Roach was bruisingly committed on 'Deeds, Not Words', a superb statement that makes a nonsense of generic pigeonholes like 'hardbop' but which also feels like apotheosis of that often derided style. This record also included a duo featering Roach with Oscar Pettiford which was made during a Sonny Rollins session.

The king of cymbals

Selothi

Max Roach is the only jazz drummer where i actively long for drum solos, so the unaccompanied piece "Conversation" is the highlight of this for me. Those cymbals... it's as though he's playing the air itself.

This CD reissue of a Max Roach Riverside date is notable for featuring the great young trumpeter Booker Little and for utilizing Ray Draper’s tuba as a melody instrument; tenor saxophonist George Coleman and bassist Art Davis complete the excellent quintet. Highlights include “It’s You or No One,” “You Stepped out of a Dream” and Roach’s unaccompanied drum piece “Conversation.” This is fine music from a group that was trying to stretch themselves beyond hard bop. – Scott Yanow
