As on his American debut, 1997′s Black Pearls, Brazilian session veteran and saxophone virtuoso Leo Gandelman emphasizes covers that aren’t quite standards. The best track here is a stunning remake of Herb Alpert’s “Rise,” though the sax player also contributes inventive arrangements of Beck’s “Deadweight,” Sting’s “Fragile,” Jobim’s “Antiqua,” and the João Donato-Caetano Veloso tune “A Rã.” – John Bush
