A killer soul-jazz guitarist brings the funk.
1999 | Label: Ubiquity / Luv N' Haight

When it comes to soul jazz, any track with the word "Boogaloo" in the title is usually a sure bet, so it goes without saying that anything by Wes Montgomery-influenced guitarist "Boogaloo Joe" Jones would be worth a spin. This fine and funky album was recorded in 1975, but — contemporary Stevie Wonder and Olivia Newton-John covers notwithstanding — it sounds closer to '71 or '72, with the title track packing the same sort of jazz-meets-blaxploitation-soundtrack approach that Grant Green employed on his Final Comedown album.
