I like BOTH

Jumpin_Jim

Need to balance the previous review just a little bit. I'm under 60 and still prefer the cleaner top end rather than the heavy bass. (I like bass but not at the expense of the top end). That's probably why there are two versions available? I used to prefer the Mercury Rock ‘n’ Roll versions when I was DJ’ing to a 1950’s crowd, but I now prefer the earlier versions. Too each their own, because Louis IS Louis and That's That! ENJOY BOTH !

great songs; So-So Remasters

MDProgger

If the 5 CD collection "Louis Jordan & His Tympani 5" wasn't on e-music, I'd give this 2 disc set 5 stars. However, I downloaded both collections, found only 1 song, "I Know You," on this collection not on the more encompassing "Louis Jordan & His Tympani 5." I systematically listened to each of these tracks after listening to the same track from the other one. Clearly the same original recordings, the remasters of the other collection much bassier and hence much better to ME, being a bass player, lower bit-rate & all. These are heavy on the treble & not at all concerned with the bass, At least try not to make the mistake of downloading BOTH as all these songs except one are on the other collection. For Louis Jordan newbies under 60, 1st try "The Essential Recordings" 1950's stereo Rock & Roll arrangements of Jordan staples that make a better 1st impression on ears used to High Fidelity & Stereo.

For the most part, this double-disc compilation of tracks by Louis Jordan & His Tympany 5 along with other groups features re-recordings of the classic material he cut for Decca. It’s immediately apparent in the sound of these sides. That said, it is Jordan, and it can be honestly said that the man never issued a bad recording. If the original sides are not important to you, or if you are a collector of the brilliant one’s sides, this might be a fine way to compare and contrast. If you are looking into Jordan for the first time, it might be best to check out the originals, but you still can’t go wrong with this one. – Thom Jurek
