Here are some nifty Noel numbers from Chet Baker, Ruth Brown, Bill Evans and the Red Garland Trio, among others. The highlight is Coleman Hawkins doing "Greensleeves."

Ho, ho, ho...

RitmoLatino

Just a warning to avoid track 11, “The Christmas Waltz”. It appears Anita O'Day had one too many eggnogs before recording the vocals -- she's horribly off key and it's rather horrifying. The rest is perfectly acceptable and a nice change from the stuff you hear on the radio this time of year. Highlights include “Winter Wonderland” by the Red Garland Trio, “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town” by Bill Evans, and Chet Baker's version of “Winter Wonderland”.

They Say All Music Guide

Fantasy has put together a dozen Christmas jazz performances on this interesting CD with five of them (by Ron Affif, Ruth Brown, Curtis Peagler, Joe Pass and Anita O’Day) being previously unissued. In addition there are fine performances from Hank Crawford, Bill Evans (“Santa Claus Is Coming to Town”), Coleman Hawkins, Red Garland, Niels Lan Doky, Tom Harrell and Chet Baker (his 1953 version of “Winter Wonderland”). It’s an enjoyable set of bop-oriented Xmas jazz. – Scott Yanow
