George Gershwin with the Victor Symphony Orchestra, George Gershwin: American Master – Featuring the Rhapsody in Blue
2000 | Label: Avid Records / The Orchard

Composers aren't always their own best advocates as performers, but George Gershwin played with an inimitable jauntiness that buoyed even his most melancholy tunes. Here, antique recordings and piano rolls are cobbled into a compelling portrait of Gershwin at the piano &#8212 which is where he spent most of his time.

We are used to "Rhapsody" played by huhe main stream symphony orchestras-the best would be Bernstein's late 50s recording. However how refreshing to hear the Whiteman band play (with of course Gershwin on piano) the piece as it was meant to be heard-with a 20s dance band. The other surprise is "American In Paris" and the taxi horns are cute. Great album!
