An epiphany in my hammock

Seikilos

I put this album on while lazing in my hammock on a beautiful day earlier this summer and it has been in heavy rotation among my top 10 ever since. Great beats, tight rhymes and fun times. My only regret is that I didn't download this album sooner.

Earthy

PUTS certainly know their stuff, they have extraordinary production values, great musical abilities and a very genuine sound. As others have said, they put out very consistent records with some definite bright spots. That said, in listening to my entire catalog or PUTS, 4 albums + they do become at times a bit redundant although, strangely, this sometimes lends a comfortable familiarity to the records. Sort of like listening to Tribe for the umpteen zillionth time. In contrast to some other major figures in West Coast Underground HH (Madlib, Del etc.) who come, seemingly from the west coast of mars PUTS remains almost always organic and, well, earthy. For me PUTS come highly recommended, though if you're looking for something to twist your head off PUTS may not be your angle.

One of my favourite albums

rupey

These cats are smooth. They've created an underground hip-hop classic with this album. Filled with fantastic jazz and funk loops, it features great rhyme flow, and soulful honest lyrics. It recalls the hey days of ATCQ, De La and Pharcyde but with the great production values you expect of this decade. Download it, then download it again. You'll be toe tappin before you even realise.

This is it

Funktastic

How did I ever miss this album first time round? It's the perfect funk / jazzy tipped hiphop with awesome lyrics that often leave you smiling cos it's so true (check out '43 Labels I Like'). Sampling wise 'Yehaw Partystyles' has about the best chill bossa-kinda sample I've heard in years. Just download it. This album is worth every credit.

They Say All Media Guide

People Under the Stairs’ Thes One and Double K have not succumbed to a “sophomore jinx” with their second album, Question in the Form of an Answer. In fact, they’ve created a very solid hip-hop album from top to bottom; the rhymes are creative and the beats are very on point. Refusing to use any keyboards (a rarity in the modern hip-hop era), the duo construct their music completely from the funky records they dig up; Pete Rock would love these guys and their pure hip-hop aesthetic. He’d probably also have loved the fact that the album has over 20 solid tracks, but People Under the Stairs could have used a good A&R rep here to cut out a few of the lesser tracks and up the ante on the more solid ones, making them even more banging. But overall, People Under the Stairs really establishes a solid record with this release. – Nick Pfeiffer
