definitely different

KyleM

These songs have all been taken apart and put together entirely differently with different instruments, various samples, but no consistant vocals -- but with the "spirit" of the original songs intact (in some ways, better?). There's a lot of humor here but (IMHO) the artist really liked/understood the original songs and did great reinterpretation of them. It's certainly not for all people, though -- make sure to listen to the samples first. Thanks to emusic for making this available!

apropos interpretations indeed!

those of ordinary thinking and simplistic mindset will never be able to comprehend this release. however, more intelligent individuals with the capacity of abstract thought will completely understand these renditions and embrace them not only with their superior intellects, but with their hearts as well. very well done.

super coool

This lowdown, smooth downtempo album delivers old favorites with new and slower flavor. Sitars and Indian drum beats backed by the familiar backbones of such contemporary classics show the esoteric nature of this break beat interpretation. No, it's a far cry from the originals, but a beautiful opening of new, electronic music nonetheless.

this sucks soooo much

All0major0labels0suck

This is not rock, not industrial and not clever. First off, these are NOT covers of the songs listed. Not even close. It's all insturmental, with a bass, a flute and a bad drummer. It sounds like Enya or Yanni. They had no right to use these song titles, not legally or even artistically, because they don't play the same music or use the lyrics. This joke of a band should be locked up just for sucking so bad. What a rip off.

When a former member of Pigface, Killing Joke, and Ministry suddenly discovers his sense of humor, it’s a good idea to duck and cover — the joke may not be an entirely pleasant one. To be fair, Opium Jukebox isn’t really Martin Atkins’ first stab at humor (that honor probably goes to his Christmas album), nor is it entirely clear that a joke is all this curious covers album is meant to be; the eerily beautiful instrumental rendition of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” that opens the album sounds serious enough, and Atkins’ industrial-strength adaptation of EMF’s “Unbelievable,” with its samples of Indian vocalists and its smatterings of turntablism, almost sounds respectful. But it’s hard to believe that the drastic reconstructions of “Tainted Love” and “Whip It” are meant to be anything other than tongue-in-cheek. Joke or not, the beats are all heavy and expertly wielded, and the textural variations consistently interesting. Recommended. – Rick Anderson
