Dizzy Gillespie plays the blues
2001 | Label: Fantasy / Pablo

I like all the Pablo Joe Turner records (I think I have them all). But this is the first one I bought. All the trumpet playing here is highly instructive to an ignorant person like myself. You will, I'd guess, especially love the sound of Harry "Sweets" Edison's solo at the beginning of "I Know You Love Me." (Well, it's not at the beginning, but it's the first long trumpet solo, and the song is 15 minutes long). "I Know You Love Me" gets nice and noisy and has some very amusing piano playing after somebody hollers. There's Clark Terry's solo in "Morning Noon and Night." And Dizzy Gillespie playing the blues, you know.

Blues and Jazz

Music Lover

This is a great bargain at 4 tracks -- Joe Turner isn't my favorite blues vocalist, but he is quite good here and thrown in are 2 of my favorite 5 trumpet players, Diz and Little Jazz plus two other world class, stellar, unbelievable trumpet players. The format is loose -- happen what may happen approach -- but this works well and it provides a freewheeling good time for all.

A little later on, we get Deerhoof's Friend Opportunity. Aren't we lucky? I imagine you have your… more »
