A winning collection of late '70s Afrobeat
2000 | Label: Afrodisiac / The Orchard

Compiled by European crate-digger Fischer P, Booniay!! is a winning collection of mid-to-late '70s Afrobeat, makossa and highlife unearthed from Ghana, the Ivory Coast, Guinea, Senegal and Mali. None of these bands ever attained, say, Manu Dibango's global props &#8212 crate-diggers never give up their secrets. Working in the vein of James Brown, Dibango and Fela Kuti, their music continues to move. Brigith Engelberts and the B.E. Movement turn in two horn-driven numbers &#8212 "Get Together" and "Tolambo Funk" &#8212 that must have electrified metropolitan discotheques. George Danquah's highlife scorcher "Hot and Jumpy" includes some countrified and jazzy guitar solos and one monstrous funk bridge. The standout is William Onyeabor's "Body and Soul," a mesmerizing 11-minute track that, remixed here by Jamaican dubmaster Scientist, points back to late-'60s JB and mid-'70s Fela, and forward to early-'80s Sly and Robbie. In any language, this is funky stuff.

So many great tracks

Stick-Up-Artist

I downloaded so much of this one that I might as well of downloaded the whole thing, which ain't my style. I don't know who Brigth Engelberts is but he is awesome! He's as fun at a party as any James Brown/Chuck Brown whatever. Also great: Good Samaritan, #'s 4&5. Really fun summertime record. Throw a party!

Damn Great Funk

This is very good funk. It has a very seventish sound to it and contains elements of Afrobeat as well. If you like funk, get it and put on your dance booties because I assure you, you won't be able to stay put after hearing this.

Boogie!

My seven year old son invented about 24985648376 new dances during the first track alone. It is a really good album. Like James Brown, only more so.

Production Editor's Dozen

By J. Edward Keyes, Editor-in-Chief

My interest in music has never been especially casual. By age six I'd already worked my way through my parents 'towering boxes of classic rock LPs, and by high school I was more interested in dubbing my friend's Nitzer Ebb singles than I was in, say, Appetite for Destruction (though in retrospect, I realize this was probably poor judgment). The one consistent thing was that no matter what I was listening to at any given… more »

This is a companion piece to Afrodisiac’s The Danque and is another solid collection of ’70s West African funk tracks. There is a bit more of an overt African flavor to these tracks, like the South African-flavored horns of “Good Samaritan,” and, of course, the handful of African vocals. But these really are more funk than Afro-beat, and there are some killer sounds contained here. As with The Danque, crate-diggers and DJs could add some real spice to the dancefloor with this one. – Sean Westergaard
