The end of an era.
2000 | Label: KOCH Records / Entertainment One Distribution

The appealing "Do It Again" would have ranked as a fine single under other circumstances, but coming a year after "Come Dancing" it couldn't lay claim to the same international appeal. The most listenable track here is the languorous "Good Day," an unhurried pop groove inspired by Davies 'attempts to come to terms with the end of his relationship with Chrissie Hynde. It also references glamorous British post-war pin-up Diana Dors, who died during the song's composition: "News of the world, tea and biscuits in bed/ The headlines said that Diana is dead," sings Davies, "so today has got to be a good day."

For all its highs, the album has the feel of a band working apart. "Going Solo," "Missing Persons" and "Sold Me Out" were lifted from the Ray Davies TV movie Return to Waterloo, recorded by the Kinks minus brother Dave, who was allowed two of his own songs on this collection. The biggest surprise is that Dave's slow rocker "Living on a Thin Line" rates as one of the most powerful tracks, touching as it does on lyrical subjects (looking for a lost England) more traditionally associated with his brother. The Kinks come back...again

LeeRocker

Ray Davies is, with the possible exception of Loudon Wainwright III, is the most under-rated songwriter of his generation. Despite some earlier efforts that many found a tad pretentious or over-reaching, Davies' proletarian voice was unmistakably literate and ironic, even within his catchiest, most radio-friendly tunes. On Word of Mouth, he returns to basics: hooky rockers like "Do It Again" and "Sold Me Out" as well as powerful ballads like "Living On A Thin Line" make this a great overall record. Ray's brother Dave kicks ass on lead guitar as always -- he's always been under-rated as well...maybe that's why they fought so much.

I have listened casually to the Kinks for many years but had not really heard complete albums until now. Excellent songs on here if you like the Kinks.

State of Confusion gave the Kinks their biggest single in nearly 20 years, but they didn’t try to replicate the music hall-tinged pop of “Come Dancing” on its follow-up, Word of Mouth, preferring to concentrate on straight-ahead hard rock. Most of the material was well crafted, but only a few songs were distinctive, particularly the circular, synth-spiked minor hit “Do It Again.” – Stephen Thomas Erlewine
