At The Drive-In, Vaya
1999 | Label: Fearless Records

Before they split into the prog-operatic Mars Volta and the pounding but atmospheric Sparta, they were At the Drive-In, convulsing between the poles of brainy math-rock and exultant, liberating punk. Vaya is an adventurously gleaming collection of songs; there's careening beauty, a loveliness that blushes and breathes within the folds of the electrified rhythms, as howler Cedric Bixler strings words together in a paranoid slipstream of consciousness. "What if forensics finds the answer, what if they stole my fingerprints?" he cries on "Metronome Arthritis." "Rascuache" has the fluidity of chill electronica but its eruptions of mellifluous rock burn hard and bright like an emergency flare. The hard-charging "Heliotrope" hangs high guitar notes overhead while the pace shifts without dissonance, but the gentleness of "198d" is cut short with dramatic bursts of noise. If Rage Against the Machine had replaced some of their naked aggression with a deeper sense of grace, they might have begun to achieve what At The Drive-In did in these seven songs.

I go back to this more often than than their Mars Volta offerings. Raw energy, blistering instruments. Download it and be blown away.

These guys were great. Mars Volta and Sparta only make that more clear to me. Finding meaning in the ridiculous word play is a bit challenging but I just accept that aspect of the At The Drive In sound. Unfortunately, Relationship of Command was their swansong and not the beginning of their new awesome period. This record is the indication of what they would do on that great record. I like all the ATDI records and wish they had not splintered off and become less in the process. That story is as old as the hills though. My favorite bands seem to always break up and spawn bands that just aren't as awesome as the original(Jawbreaker to Jets to Brazil, Hot Water Music to the Draft, Black Flag to the Rollins Band, etc).

WOW

This is absolutely and positively one of my favorite albums. Just when it lulls you into a relaxed state, it kicks you in the face. At some points it displays dark and complex music/lyrics, but at other times it's just pure rage. Fantastic!

My older brother Justin told me that the quote about preparing "your sleep apparatus" on Vaya's third track, "Ursa Minor" was a reference to a dildo, and I've never looked at this EP in the same light since. Prior to the prog-rock disposition of their final LP and the following Mars Volta/Sparta releases, Vaya featured At The Drive-In at their strongest. Is it the off-but-on drums, spastic vocals, weird sound effects? No, that's in all their albums. Is it the dildo reference? I think it just might be. This is At The Drive-In at their least innocent, finally turning into the dangerous "bull in a china shop" they'd only hinted at in earlier efforts – the world is going to hell, and they're here to let us know, setting us comfortably down in second row seats to watch the show.

Many people mention this album as a bridge between Casino and Relationship, and they would be right. This EP has some fantastic songs on it - Rascuache is probablly the best song the band has made, and Proxima Centauri is right up there.

7 sharp songs

This 7 track mini album served as a bridge between "In Casino Out" and the major label release "Relationship of Command". It is a definite progression in sound and is on my top 10 list of emusic albums ever. They have refined their sound but kept the heaviness and originallity of their earlier works. What stands out here though is the songwriting and the sheer emotion that pours out of this album without it being "emo". I rate this album higher than "Releationship of Command", which is high praise indeed. Standout tracks: "Rascuache" and "198d" Mixtaper - an emusic community site

They Say All Media Guide

With the release of this absolutely astounding 7 song, 23+ minute EP, At The Drive-In seem to have finally come together and found the true and beautiful essence of their music. They have taken the raw intensity and power of their earlier efforts, and focused upon it- bringing forth something that surpasses anything they have done to this point. The first and perhaps most original song on the album ‘Rascuache’ is filled with slightly tribal rhythms interwoven with beautiful electronic tones, fierce guitars and the passionate vocals that ATDI are known for. Some of the other tracks such as ’300 MHz’ and ‘Metronome Arthritis’ take the sound that was established on ‘in/CASINO/OUT’ and mix it with a Rage Against The Machine type feel, without sounding redundant. The last track ’198d’ is filled with such emotion that it is nearly impossible to resist repeating it time and again. Overall, ‘Vaya’ shows an incredible band moving in a direction so exciting and overwhelming that will leave many dying to see what they do next. – Blake Butler
