Various Artists – Traditional Crossroads, Istanbul 1925
2000 | Label: Traditional Crossroads / IODA

In 1920s Turkey, the faint influence of the Ottoman Empire still lingered in the air, mixed with the shock of the new, the sounds of the Middle East, Europe and North Africa all meeting. These classic tracks show a melange emerging, a souk of musical spices that's entrancing and full of Eastern promise. Ouds and saxophones, voices and Gypsy bands fill the air in a glorious riot of music that fills the senses.

Treasures from a time long ago

Lucyland

This is one of the most beautiful CDs I own. The first 5 seconds of the clarinet on the first track sent shivers up my spine and hooked me right away. Fans of the oud, rebetika, csifeteli, as well as early 20th Century (Turkish) Hye (Udi Hrant, Marko Melkon) will most certainly feel this one.
