Major label refugee finds his voice and his footing on his crew's indie imprint

If you only know Ice Cube's little cousin from his glorious fluke "Mistadobalina" or his Gorillaz guest toon-in', you've never quite heard Del in his element: floating casual, polysyllabic ridicule against trivial rivals who aren't "phat/ they're flabby" over funky electroburble (mostly self-produced). He kindly advises proper bodily hygiene ("or else you'll be fun-kee") on "If You Must," discusses his interests on "Proto Culture" (video games) and "BMs" (weed), and for added nerd cred, he drops a Battlestar Galactica namecheck from back before Cylons had boobs. As the man says, "Don't hate/ Felicitate."

Del rips it, and still manages to make you laugh to the dank beats and incredible feats he accomplishes on this classic album.

After the goldrush I began to suspect a little, just a tiny bit, that perhaps rap had run its course. And to be honest a lot of it had. We've all heard about how so-and-so got his the hard way, how he doesn't care about his women, how he has so much money he lights his cigars with dollar-bills, yada, yada, yada, etc, etc, etc. Dell and few select others are beautiful anomalies, creative artists now side-lined by a main-stream blinded by its own tasteless jewelry. Long live the underground, screw the sell-outs, this is what rap was, this is what it should be.

my favorite hip hop album, ever, for a long time, and will be. hear it openly and realize why there is the speach on the main stream being wack, when Del who you may or may not know well is this nice.

Del is one of the baddest lyricists on the mic today. In an era where the kids are growing to listen about bling, and rap music that you would here in a club, Del brings a unique style to the game. I give him props for his original funky beats and the lyrics his mind produces. I am surprised he is not a hip hop star. They seem to give contracts to anyone who speak these days it seems and the quality of hip hop i my opinion is dying. We need more rappers like del in the game. Its not that I dont like any new shit thats out today, but you get bored listining about how much bling you own or what club you're tearin up. Del brings this diversity and its fuckin dope shit.

Both Sides of the Brain is Del Tha Funkee Homosapien’s fourth album, on which Del makes an effort to show both sides of his personality. For example, on “Proto Culture,” Del is joined by Khaos Unique, and the two rap about one of their favorite things — video games. The listener also gets to see another side of Del on “Jaw Gymnastics,” on which Del and Casual team up for a fierce battle rhyme. Throughout the album, Del does the same thing, covering topics from drunk driving and crack addicts to the importance of good hygiene. Besides Casual on “Jaw Gymnastics” and Khaos Unique on “Proto Culture,” Del is also joined by El-P on “Offspring” and A-plus on “Stay on Your Toes.” Del produced the majority of the album, and even though he hasn’t produced much in the past, most of his beats are good. The listener can also hear Del’s video game obsession in a lot of the songs he produced, as many contain samples from video games. – Dan Gizzi
