Classic Dub Master

EMUSIC-01C30E94

My best friend introduced me to this album way back when and I was smitten by the freshness of Mad Professor's sound. Having grown up with Jamaican dubs from my youth, this was a breath of fresh air, as also were the next five sets in the "Crazy" series. After those he became somewhat predictable for a time. Nonetheless, he should be in the Dub Hall of Fame alongside legends like Prince Jammy, King Tubby, Scientist, Adrian Sherwood, Lee Perry, Bunny Lee, Sly & Robbie, Linval Thompson, Harry Mudie, Dennis Bovell, Errol Thompson, and Joe Gibbs.

On his own small British Label lurks the most sonically (and electronically) creative producer of the age. The Mad Professor’s own albums, while still clearly reggoid, mix in a vision like George Clinton on astrodust and an approach to sampling, synth and so on that makes other electron-maniacs sound like nice little old ladies playing hymns. Macka is a little more conservative, though still pretty ionospheric, what with the synth balafon and Martian belly-drums. – John Storm Roberts
