a promising voice -- only partially redeemed here

EMUSIC-0086C7D6

As others have pointed out, Ms. Case has one of the greatest country music voices -- sharing the same rarified air as Loretta, Patsy, Dolly, and Emmylou. Still, it's obvious this record is from far earlier in her career -- her own individual (shall we even say quirky) artistic sensibility has yet to fully emerge. Still, in these dozen cuts, she lays down more good, solid country than Shania and all her glitzy disciples have done in their combined careers....

A Beautiful Voice

Dude_E

This girl can SING! Rock-Pop is not the usual place to find Women musicians. So off to C+W for this early album. No Matter: Neko CAN SING! As for the C+W...I'm not a "country person", just a Child of Concrete but GREAT is GREAT!

Young and Powerful

I have to agree that this is Neko "in the beginning". It demonstrates the incredible power in her voice and her underlying style yet to come, especially on "The Virginian", Lonely Old Styles" and "Somebody Led Me Away". You can hear the Neko of today just bursting to come out. Download it for 'The Complete Collection of..' and history's sake if nothing else. You won't regret it when it's no longer available.

Not any good? Sez who?

ANYTHING Neko does is worth listening to. This album is a delight! So "Honky Tonk Hiccups" is goofy? Well, it's a great dose of goofiness we all need and it's good for all that ails you. If you want the complete package, download this package here; you can get the two missing tunes elsewhere.

Not only is she a beautiful woman, but her voice and her music are beautiful too. I like these tracks!

Only one good song

ryanlehn

A lot of the songs are much like the happy country rock crap that you hear on the radio these days (which is not where Neko shines). A few of you are saying it's basically good as long as she's singing it, but I really don't hear very much good singing here. It sounds like she's straining a lot and even going out of key in some spots. Download track 3 and move onto Blacklisted (that entire album is great). I wonder if the two tracks which aren't available are any good???

People who tell you to skip this album...

ArmondoMfume

...are dumb. This is Neko in her earlier form, unhinged and doing some crazy stuff. I saw Neko in Chicago recently and I asked her to play something off this album and she said "Oh yeah, right, I would rather you meet me after the show and punch me in the gut." Even Neko doesn't like this album but it's more out of her cute self-consciousness, (Neko, you're not fat), and embarrassment over cuts like "Honky Tony Hiccups," which has a hilarious chorus. There are moments of brilliance on this record, and pretty much anything with HER voice in it is amazing no matter what the setting.

Greenhill69 hit the nail on the head...ew, what a difference the others make

Amazing Voice

Okay, it's not as polished as Neko's newer stuff. Her talent overshadows all! Forget all of the "perfect" studio cuts we are used to hearing. This is raw and beautiful.

Neko Case’s solo debut is a delightful collection of heartfelt originals and vibrant covers ranging from traditional country fare (Ernest Tubb’s “Thanks a Lot,” Loretta Lynn’s “Somebody Led Me Away”) to more eclectic material (Scott Walker’s “Duchess”); the highlight is a rip-snorting rendition of the Everly Brothers’ “Bowling Green,” a duet with Zumpano’s Carl Newman. – Jason Ankeny
