Javanese Gamelan And Vocal Music From The Palace Of Yogyakarta, The Sultan’s Pleasure
2000 | Label: Music Of The World

To enter the world of the gamelan orchestra is like stepping out of time to a place where the old rules no longer apply. What initially seems like an unsettling cacophony of gongs and struck bronze tubes quickly reveals itself to be a cornucopia of interlocking, minimalist melodies that become both lush and soothing. The voices turn it truly unearthly, the harmonies elusive, moving with a stateliness that takes on the rhythm of breathing. Startlingly beautiful.

Gorgeous!

I visited the Palace of Yogya in 1992 and had the chance to view a performance by the classical dance and gamelan troupe there. This album brings me back to that very day, where I sat on the ground in the sweltering heat, hypnotised and mesmerised by the magic of Javanese culture. This is a gorgeous and exotic album that at will whisk you away to ancient Java.

The Sultan’s Pleasure features rare recordings by the Royal Ensemble of the Palace of Yogyakarta, assembled through a special agreement with a Javanese sultan; the focus is on gamelan and vocal performances, nicely packaged to include extensive liner notes. – Jason Ankeny
