Pianist Monty Alexander, with the exception of “Make Believe,” sticks to offbeat material on his trio session with bassist Ira Coleman and drummer Dion Parson. In addition to his original “Dear Diz,” Alexander performs such songs as Anthony Newley’s “Pure Imagination,” Bob Marley’s “Lively Up Yourself,” the “Theme from The Pawnbroker” and “Young at Heart.” The emphasis is on medium tempos, and the results are consistently swinging and colorful. – Scott Yanow
