I'm fairly certain "Before we were security guards" is an earlier work (it sounds it, certainly), but this is really the quintessential introduction to Hawksley. It's a shame it's the only album here, but it is a great way to begin listening to him. For anyone who does happen to begin this way, do yourself a favour and seek out the rest of his music. Every facet he presents on For Him and the Girls gets fleshed out on subsequent albums. As such, it does tend to wander a little bit, but with Bullets, Paper Shoes, Sissies, and Tarantulove, this is a can't miss album. Also, if you get the opportunity to see him live, do it. The two best live performances my wife and I have ever attended were both Hawksley, and they were as different from each other as could be.
One of the most unfortunately ignored artists working today (in the states, of course). An absolutely brilliant lyrisist and a masterful musician--Hawksley shouldn't be missed at any cost. "For Him And The Girls" is where you must start. And until eMusic hooks us up with the rest of him amazing catalouge of work--you'll have to scout around on amazon...
Hawksley's voice is truly a instrument on this album. Emotional, catchy, and original. 'No Sissies' , 'Sad House Daddy' and 'Bullets' are all great places to start. 'Paper Shoes' is Hawksley at his outrageous best.
Highly Recommended! Along with all of his albums, one of Canada's best kept secrets. RIYL: Jeff Buckley, Rufus Wainwright, David Bowie, U2... Tarantulove is such a great song.
