The Star Room Boys, Why Do Lonely Men And Women Want To Break Each Others Hearts?
2001 | Label: Checkered Past / The Orchard

Many of the alternative-country bands in the mid-to-late '90s were less concerned with the "alternative" side of the equation than with the classic sounds of country that had gone missing from mainstream radio. The Star Room Boys were among the best of these revivalists; singer Dave Marr was a natural, and they had an ace-in-the-hole with pedal steel whiz John Neff, who decorated the band's repertoire with remarkable reels and runs that worked within the structure of the songs rather than dominating them.

Had a chance to see The Star Room Boys open for Hank III, fab live show. They are the real deal.

How do you name a song that? How do you weave lyrics around like that? How do you sing like that? I can't get this song out of my head.

Stop, Look and Listen

Hoofprints

There are some great tear jerkers on this album, full of lost love, lingering aches and smooth whiskey. Dave Marr has the perfect voice for this material, the warbles are all in the right places and the sorrow and hurt are so real you can feel them. The pedal steel work is outstanding and accompanies the vocals to perfection. I am surprised I hadn't heard this before but I downloaded a number of tracks and I like them better with each listen. There are a couple of songs that dont quite work as well as others, but listen to tracks 1,2,3,5,8,11 and 13 and you wont be disappointed. If you like something a little on the quieter side, something to listen to in a dark smoky bar on a painfully bright day, you'll love this album.

The Star Room Boys’ debut album Why Do Lonely Men & Women Want To Break Each Others’ Hearts spotlights the group’s tight playing and songwriting, as well as Dave Marr’s world-weary twang of a voice. Songs like “Was There Something In Her Eye?” “Both Our Towns,” “Almost Doesn’t Count” and the title track are down-to-earth yet atmospheric, and almost always lovelorn and bittersweet. A fine debut from a group unafraid to delve deeper into country’s blue side. – Heather Phares
