Czech Philharmonic under George Szell, Dvorak: Symphony No.9 in e minor, Op.95, “From the New World”; Smetana, “Ma Vlast” (“My Country”)
2000 | Label: Avid Records / The Orchard

In 1892, Czech patriot Antonin Dvorák reluctantly left his homeland for a well-paid teaching post in New York City. His patron wanted an American school of composition through his model, and it was with great acclaim that his Symphony No. 9 "From the New World" appeared at Carnegie Hall the next year. The famous English horn tune opening the second movement is said to have come from a Negro spiritual, and regardless of its provenance, Dvorák was a strong supporter of the use of black and Amerindian source material as the true music of the new world. In this vintage recording, Hungarian maestro George Szell leads the orchestra first conducted by Dvorák himself.

Wonderful performances spoilt by poor transfers

BJK

Daphne Carr's 'review' is next to useless. These are historic performances, probably recorded in the 1930s (I have them from other sources). Szell was an outstanding Dvorak conductor but you would not know it from these transfers because the noise reduction has removed all the 'bite' and incisiveness from the sound. If you want these works, get good modern performances, and if you want to hear Szell conducting them there are far superior alternatives, including historic performances.

Poor recording

I hate to say it, but this sounds like it was recorded in a broom cupboard. The sound is just wrong. It has no depth at all. Love the symphony, but I'm going to go and find another version. I can't listen to this one.
