An ancient artifact

reno3001

I belive this was initially a fan club only release, featuring mostly if not all cover versions, that fans would have to mail away for. As in checks and envelopes and stamps. As such, it was a rare and precious object not available in what we used to call "stores" and we probably liked it as much for its rarity as its quality. All in all, a fun, raw look at where the Long Ryders were coming from, but, as mentioned, hardly definitive.

LIke the band, but..

not this CD. Sounds like it's coming out of a trash can. Not very good sound quality.

Why I joined eMusic

I was searching a website trying to find the "Looking For Lewis and Clark" anthology which led me to eMusic and this particular group of songs. I vaguely remember seeing it on vinyl, but I came late to the Long Ryders party (a free concert at UCLA opening for the Alarm in, I think, 1987), so I didn't buy it way back when. It's fun for completists but not a great introduction to the band. For that, hunt down both "Two Fisted Tales" and "State of Our Union"

The Long Ryders were one of the finest retro/roots bands to emerge from the U.S. in the 1980s. Their recorded legacy on Island and Frontier easily bears this out. When the Ryders disbanded in 1988, they left behind miles (well, at least hundreds of yards) of unreleased tapes. This release, a fan-club-only compilation, illustrates the band’s power and diversity, especially on cover tunes like “What Goes On” and “I Shall Be Released.” The whole affair has been lovingly and intelligently put together, and is a nice tribute to one of the finest bands of the decade. – Matthew Greenwald
