Latin Jazz Classic!!

REVB

No matter what your in the mood for you can't go wrong with this album. Pucho and His Latin Soul Brothers show their versatility on this their debut album from 1965. The material ranges from then current pop tunes like The Beatles' "And I Love Her" and "Yesterday" to jazz standards like Duke Ellington's "Caravan". The truly standout track is Pucho's own composition "Vietnam Mambo" which sums up the vibe of the times without uttering a single word. Let's face it...It doesn't get any better than this.

A bit more jazz- and pop-oriented than some of his later sessions, with covers of “Yesterday,” “The Shadow of Your Smile,” “And I Love Her,” “Walk On By,” and “Goldfinger.” However, when Pucho decides to pull out the funky grooves — as he does on “Cantaloupe Island,” “Vietnam Mambo,” and “Strange Thing Mambo” — he and the Latin Soul Brothers can smoke. Even at its slightest, this is decent mood music. At its best, it’s significantly more than that. The CD reissue is a good deal, adding the entirety of the 1966 LP Saffron Soul. – Richie Unterberger
