Incredible Document

Splanky

This is one of the first jazz cd's I bought and is definitely one of the ones I always return to. Great songs and great playing!

A compelling recording

rene.leemans

This session and 'Monk's Music' are arguably the most compelling records with horns that he ever made. Nothing else to say about, just highly recommended...

Get it

pol_troop

If you dig Jazz, get it. If your favorite genre is pop, you just wont "get it".

Rare recordings

keys

You should note that "Ruby My Dear," "Trinkle, Tinkle" and "Nutty" are the only other known recording of Monk and Coltrane from the Five Spot era besides the above mentioned Carnegie Hall recordings recently found. For these tracks I'd have to disagree with platyjoe!

Tres Cool

For 50 year old music...it is incredible and timeless. My personal fave...Slow Dance...If can't get laid with this one, you are in real trouble!

Music for Cool Cats

gratefulbear

The first time I played this album, Kato, my cat, came running from the bedroom where he had been curled up on one of my pillows. He stared at the speakers for a moment, then proceeded to do a complex series of yoga stretches. He then sat down in front of the speakers in “sphinx” pose and listened to the music. It’s a short album – only six songs – but Kato sat in front of the speakers listening for the full 37 minutes, till the album ended. Then he stood up and went about his catly business. I’d never seen Kato respond to music before, but I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that he likes jazz from the beatnik Fifties. He is, after all, one cool cat. P.S.: I like the album too!

The Sum in not Always Greater....

Not the best jazz record you'll ever download, but necessary nonetheless. 5 stars for "Ruby, My Dear".

They Say All Music Guide

Much of the music on this two-LP set is quite essential for any serious jazz library (all of it is also included in Monk’s giant 15-CD box set The Complete Riverside Recordings). Although Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane played together for several months in 1957, until the discovery of a live tape (which has been issued on Blue Note), the music on this two-fer (which includes several tracks with a larger group that also features Coleman Hawkins, “Monk’s Mood” by a trio with bassist Wilbur Ware, and three outstanding tracks with a quartet) was all that existed of their historic collaboration. Coltrane developed rapidly during his period with Monk and he is heard in brilliant form on “Trinkle, Tinkle” and “Nutty.” – Scott Yanow
