Remarkable album

rene.leemans

For the first time, the great jazz pianist is heard in a new context-as leader of a group larger than his customary trio. Even's interplay with his four colleagues here-each of them one of Bill's personal favorites on his instrument-creates a most unusual and remarkable album. Strongly recommended...

One of Bill Evans best

nDada

Famous for his beloved trio setting, Bill Evans played some of his best music with additional players: "Interplay" and it's companion "Loose Blues" are outstanding examples. Here he plays a mix of bop and modal jazz displaying his great versatility as soloist and sideman. I agree that Jim Hall is quite brilliant here (and on the other album) and course he recorded the accaimed "Undercurrent" duets with Evans soon after. The great Freddie Hubbard is terrific here and the session deserved a mention in his eMusic bio. A must-have recording for fans of all these key post-bop greats and fab listening for everyone else.

As early as the 1982 recordings for his debut on ECM, In Line — solos, overdubbed solos and duets with bassist Arild Andersen — there was this… more »

Although pianist Bill Evans had been recording as a leader steadily since 1959 (with one date in 1956), it wasn’t until this 1962 session — one of his first after returning to active playing a year after bassist Scott LaFaro’s tragic death — that he introduced a horn. Evans is featured with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, guitarist Jim Hall, bassist Percy Heath, and drummer Philly Joe Jones performing five veteran standards (highlighted by “You and the Night and the Music,” “You Go to My Head,” and “Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams”), plus the pianist’s blues “Interplay.” Excellent music. [The CD reissue also adds a second take of "I'll Never Smile Again."] – Scott Yanow
