This is a superb album. Sonny Criss shows a real sense of delicacy, control and melody. One of my new favorites

Best Criss I Know

habermouse

Not all of Sonny Criss' work knocks me out, but this album is exceptionally good. The Tapscott tunes and arrangements really shine, and the use of modes doesn't run into a dead-end as it sometimes does. Try it! An overlooked gem.

KILLER

EMUSIC-00FCD62E

This is one of the very best jazz albums on eMusic, and deserves way wider attention. Features arrangements by Horace Tapscott, responsible for the epic hatART album "Dark Tree" years later...The 30-second preview of "Sandy and Niles" will definitely let you know who you're dealing with.

A Real Gem

This is a real gem. It features Sonny (as,sop) accompanied by Conte Candoli (tp) Dick Nash (tb) Ray Draper (tu) David Sheer (as) Sonny Criss (as,sop) Teddy Edwards (ts) Pete Christlieb (bar) Tommy Flanagan (p) Al McKibbon (b) Everett Brown, Jr. (d) playing charts composed and arranged by Horace Tapscott. It's a five-star album that really cooks.

For Sonny Criss this was an unusual date. The altoist is backed for the set by a nonet arranged by the great Los Angeles legend Horace Tapscott. The arrangements are challenging but complementary to Criss’ style, and he is in top form on the six Tapscott originals. The CD reissue includes two additional alternate takes, and is highly recommended for both Criss’ playing and Tapscott’s writing. – Scott Yanow
