Bassist Leroy Vinnegar was a familiar figure on the West Coast scene of the late ’50s and early ’60s and drew praises for his entertaining, yet musically sophisticated “walking” basslines. Vinnegar has not lost his prowess, and this album features him heading a group with pianist Geoff Lee, drummer, Mel Brown and percussionist Curtis Craft. While it is Vinnegar’s date, he doesn’t dominate, but sets the table. Vinnegar produced the session and arranged nine of the eleven songs, co-arranging a tenth with Lee. It isn’t so much easy listening as nice, sophisticated material from four established pros who enjoy working with each other. – Ron Wynn
