The Collosus
I have seen Sonny about 15 times over the last 20 years. It is true, none of his recordings capture his improvisational genius. Each of them, though, has at least a couple of tracks that blow you away with his powerful, beautiful tone, his romantic but strong ballads, his playful swinging. True to the picture on "Sonny days.." this record has Sonny on a bit of a beach/island theme. He grew up in a West Indian family in NYC and knows calypso. His signature song which he plays in every concert, but never the same way twice, is "Don't Stop the Carnival." There are 3 calypso style songs on this one, MAva Mava, Tell Me You Love Me, and Kilaue--all a lot of fun. Throw in a couple of old songs given the Sonny touch and Wynton, a ballad, and you have a wonderful 40 minutes with the master.
