A collection that may not be as strong as it predecessors, but still full of overlooked gems.
2001 | Label: Fantasy / Stax

Unlike the first two Stax single sets, The Complete Stax Volt Singles Vol 3: 1972-1975 is definitely a case of diminishing returns; the final discs are so thin on actual chart hits, you can pretty much hear the debt collectors pounding on the front door. But there's still a heapin'helpin'of dynamite music on it, especially on Vol 3's first few discs. Disc 1 features some of the label's biggest hits from 1972 — including the Staple Singers'”I'll Take You There,” the Soul Children's “Hearsay” and Frederick Knight's “I've Been Lonely For So Long” — alongside such overlooked gems as Hot Sauce's “Bring It Home (And Give It to Me),” Jean Knight's “Carry On” and Sons of Slum's black power classic “Right On.”

Great Stuff

madformusic

I've been cherry picking the songs I want but everything I've downloaded to date is terrific. Great stuff. Not as commercial as motown but every bit as good.

Funky Inez Foxx!

Snooges

WOW! I just discovered Inez Foxx - thanks, Emusic! Her track "You Hurt me For The Last Time" is my favorite (disc 3; trk 14). I love it's loopy rubberband funk groove!

holy sheeesh....

Can anyone say, "Bonus Pack?" 90 DLs never seem to be enough. Anyone who says there are no good tunes on Emusic should be shot...and then drawn and quartered. Just put them out of their misery.

My Honey and Me by the Emotions on disc one is a great track--sweet female harmonies, spare funk backing and electric piano breakdown. yum!

A third brilliant volume in this series

WM

A third brilliant volume in this series. Admittedly, each volume has slightly diminishing returns, but Stax was still putting out greating records until the end.

Stax/Volt is awesome

There are at least two great songs on this collection: "Cheaper to Keep Her" by Johnnie Taylor and "Soul Street" Eddie Floyd.
