A lovely memorial to a jazz treasure
2001 | Label: Fantasy / Jazz Workshop

Recorded in April 1964, with woodwind player Eric Dolphy in the group, this live recording was retroactively made a memorial to Dolphy, who died a few months later. For example, a tune that bassist Mingus announces as "Meditations" is labeled "Praying with Eric"; the other track (both are lengthy) is titled "So Long Eric." The rest of the band includes trumpeter Johnny Coles, tenor saxman Clifford Jordan, pianist Jaki Byard and drummer Danny Richmond. Despite the fact that he had not long to live, Dolphy certainly is in fine form here. He turns in very inventive alto work on "So Long Eric," a blues, which is particularly notable because he sometimes had a tendency to improvise repetitively. He stars on bass clarinet and flute during "Praying with Eric," an extended but solidly and imaginatively arranged piece. Dolphy's flute playing is particularly exquisite but actually, everyone sounds impressive — Coles solos economically, but improvises plenty of fresh ideas; Byard runs the gamut, using heavily chordal work and substantive single note lines; Jordan turns in powerhouse performances. And you can count on Richmond to play authoritatively and intelligently, as he does here. Mingus 'rhythm section and solo work are inspired and cleanly… read more »

Best Mingus! Best Dolphy!

ketlers

This is from the Mingus 1964 tour that was probably the most highly bootlegged tour of Mingus' career. There are many other recordings on Emusic from this tour, but THIS is the best one. First, it is a legitimately recorded set, so the sound is very good (no hidden mic in the audience). Second, trumpeter, Johnny Coles left the tour in France when he sufferred from Uremia during a concert, but he is in full force on THIS recording. Third, Eric Dolphy died a few short months after the 1964 tour from Diabetes complications, but he is in full force on THIS recording. This is some of the most highly spirited jazz music I think you may ever hear and for the price of 2 credits it rates a 10 on the value scale!

You can't go wrong

Can you still get this for 2 Dls? Even if you can't it is worth whatever you have to 'spend'. 'So Long Eric' is just beautiful.

My favourite Mingus recording, words cannot describe how good this is. Dolphy and Mingus at their absolute best. A must download!

My oh my. Perhaps the peak recording of his peak group? Easily the best 50 cents spent at this site? Check google video for an hour of this lineup live in Oslo shortly after Town Hall.

Icon: Charles Mingus

By Kevin Whitehead

Few musicians brought as much passion to jazz as Charles Mingus (1922-1979). You can hear it all over his music in every period: the power, the lyricism, and the sheer propulsion. He loved independent melody lines interwoven in raucous counterpoint and infused with the emotional power of the sanctified church. As bass player he had few peers, in terms of agility, a big sound, and percussive plucking; his tender, singing work with a bow reflected… more »

They Say All Media Guide

The first of many live recordings made of Mingus’s touring band of 1964, most in Europe, it’s got one of his strongest lineups: Eric Dolphy (reeds), Johnny Coles (tpt), Clifford Jordan (ts), Jaki Byard (p), and Dannie Richmond (d). Every performance on the tour is worth listening to. The only knock against this disc is its 45-minute length. – Michael Katz
