Their Best With Steve Tucker

TheAccuser

This album seems to have been unfairly underrated and ignored; a real shame as it's one of their best, most consistent albums and definitely the best of the three done with Steve Tucker as frontman. I agree with Dak, this album has good lyrics. It's not about 'evil', it's about POWER--Morbid Angel are nothing if not confident, and thus, powerful.

Their most well rounded album

Dak

Gateways is a truly amazing piece of artful death metal. Trey Azagthoth is, as always, on top of his game as a guitarist and songwriter. The whole band moves back and forth from chugging sludge to blistering speed, and show a depth of intelligence and imagery that seems to elude so many other metal bands. Steve Tucker settled in nicely as the frontman here, where he occasionly seemed pensive and a touch nervous on Formulas Fatal to the Flesh, his debut. Drummer Pete Sandoval can only be described as an inhuman speed and rhythm machine. One thing that really stands out about this album is the lyrics, while still touching on many subjects dark and dismayed, have a spiritual significance of looking within to achieve greatness. This album is a great start for anyone curious about Morbid Angel, but have been too afraid to try them.

They Say All Music Guide

Gateways to Annihilation is a continuing statement of purpose from Morbid Angel: “We are an uncompromising death metal machine.” The disc isn’t a tremendous leap in style for the band, but is rather a refinement of their brutal craft. They sound like accomplished musicians throughout, creating a soundtrack of utter torment and famine. The group can blow heads off with their speed, as on “To the Victor the Spoils,” and also drag bodies through mid-tempo muck, exemplified on “At One With Nothing.” When the two approaches meet up, as on “Opening of the Gates,” the result is blistering. This track is particularly indicative of Morbid Angel’s strength of composition, rife with the sort of tight, intelligent dynamics that mark the album. And of course, lead player Trey Azagoth pushes the envelope all over the place, his trebly explorations of the astral plane offering relief from the band’s thuggish bottom-end. The creative and fierce Gateways to Annihilation is textbook Morbid Angel, another triumph for longtime fans and an excellent starting point for new listeners. – Matt Kantor
