The genius, in a crooning mood.
2002 | Label: Cleopatra Records / The Orchard

Talk about your daunting tasks: how would you like to try distilling the essential Ray Charles into one disk? This one, while credible, is undercut by the inclusion of too many of Ray's 1949-52 Swingtime/Downbeat sides. He started there as the singer-pianist in a trio slavishly patterned on Nat King Cole's cocktail jazz, with a little more of Charles Brown's velvety vocal sheen ("This Love of Mine"), and ended it fronting a crack eight-piece R&B band ("Kissa Me Baby"). That phase &#8212 which could easily be covered in three or four sides &#8212 consumes half the 20 tracks here, while still ignoring his minor R&B hits. The watershed Atlantic years are aptly represented with Ray's churning version of Hank Snow's "I'm Movin 'On" (his first country song), his invention of soul music out of gospel and blues with the cataclysmic "I Got a Woman" (his first R&B chart-topper) and his initial Top Ten crossover with the Latin-inflected, call-and-response carnality of "What'd I Say." His longing "Georgia on My Mind" speaks for the rest of his career, when he became the definitive American songmaster; if musicians were allowed on Mount Rushmore, Brother Ray would be the first to go up there.

Awful! (Glad I listened to the previews!)

NJ_Returns

SO GLAD I LISTENED TO THE PREVIEW B4 wasting dwnlds. Avoid this and download "Ray Charles - The Essentials"--the sound quality is 1000% better!! It's just terrible. Whoever compiled this has the chutzpuh to call it--remastered?! With what? My 1-watt speaker record player from 1975?! "Brother Ray" deserves way, WAY better than this. These tracks sound like someone put a paperbag over my speakers and then scotch-taped that. (NOTE TO EMUSIC MGMNT -- PLS PLS PLS! USE HIGHER BIT-RATES! 256 ABR should be the minimum. And how 'bout offering lossless tracks? Say the FLAC codec which is absolutely FREE.)

this website is constantly tricking me into thinking that albums are something they are not.

Sounds like trash

tomthespud

Some decent songs, but the sound quality is really bad. Ray's best work was on Atlantic and CBS, and is not available on eMusic.

"The Essential"

Alonzo

Oh, please---this is a piece of garbage. Not only is the sound absolutely dismal (recorded with a mike from a lousyspeaker, I'm guessing), it's dishonest in presenting tracks that were made in the studio (e.g. "I'm Moving On") as "live" tracks. Note that "audiences" are only heard for a brief shot at the start---never during or after the song. Note the presence of several "essence" or "essential" RC albums on this very eMusic. They seem to be mostly knockoffs of each other, freely (and illogically) mixed-up collections of everything from early 50s pseudo Nat-Cole to highwater Ray in the early-mid 60s. If you love Ray as much as I do, beware miserable ripoffs like this.

Bad Quality Recording

TJOZ36

Don't waste your downloads on this - great artist absolutely scuppered by recording people - sounds like earliest movie recordings. Downloaded 20. Deleted 20. Yeah I know, you should always preview.

Poor Recordings

BigMac

Sure, the songs are great. Now we just need to be able to hear them. It sounds as though this was recorded at a concert by a teenager in the crowd with a Mr. Microphone. The sound is just awful.

Enough Ray Already....

Demonleaf66

Don't get me wrong this is some of his best stuff. But in saying that, how great is it really. Overrated, is all I have to say...

Teenage Graceland

By Wayne Robins

After Elvis went into the Army and before the British Invasion, the years 1958-63 were rock's forgotten years. But they were the years that shaped the musical tastes of baby boomers and of acts from the Beatles and Rolling Stones to Bruce Springsteen and the Ramones. Hear the dance sensations, the one-hit-wonders, the girl groups and doo-wop singers, surfers and rockabilly twangers, the birth of Motown, the evolution of R&B into soul and so much… more »

They Say All Media Guide

Released by Cleopatra, The Essential Collection offers a serviceable anthology of some of Ray Charles’ best work, including “Georgia on My Mind,” “What’d I Say,” “Can’t You See Darlin’,” “Don’t Put All Your Dreams in One Basket,” “A Sentimental Blues,” “Baby Won’t You Please Come Home,” “I Got a Woman,” “Late in the Evening Blues,” and “You Be My Baby.” A decent but certainly not top-shelf summation of the legend’s career, this particular anthology features remastered sound. It should also be noted that this particular Essential Collection is not a part of a similarly titled series distributed through Universal. – Andy Kellman
