eMusic Review
This polished live set from the late Gaye spans from his early, innocent, pop-influenced Motown sides to later, more mature hits like "Sexual Healing" and "Let's Get it On."

I am so disappointed with another 'live' rendition of Motown. The sound on this album is so irritating, like listening to off-key singers using an empty beer can for a microphone. So I will be searching for the more, 'virgin-like,' original recordings when Marvin doesn't sound like he's having respiratory problems -- out of breath...
I'm sorry if I sound harsh but these songs sound as if they were recorded in a tin can. I love Marvin Gaye and what he stood for in his life but this is album is bad
I downloaded "Performance 1983 North American Tour" despite the warnings by other reviewers. Don't get it if you're not a hardcore fan! ;-) The sound quality is a disgrace, but Marvin Gaye's performance in some of the songs is nice. And there are not too many alternatives if you want to hear '80s songs like "Sexual Healing" live. If you're undecided between this album and "Live in Montreux 1980", get the latter! It's absolutely amazing. One of my favorite emusic downloads ever!
This one definitely should not be an Emusic pick. The recording quality is bad, that's for sure. But the most annoying thing is the horn section. They play out of tune much of the time. Sounds like the band has been thrown together just for this gig.. Don't waste your downloads on this one.
How this ever got to be an emusic "pick" is beyond me. The low recording quality overshadows the poor music selections. My advice is avoid this album altogether.
I am a big fan of Marvin Gaye but am disappointed with this live album. The recording quality is poor in my opinion. It is difficult to hear the vocals in places and there is a poor balance generally between instruments and vocals. The recording sounds amateurish. I don't think that this was Marvin at his best even if it had been well recorded and produced. I don't care for the arrangement of the medley at the start of the album- It doesn't retain any of the feel of the originals. I was hoping for something less sterile than the original motown recordings, with the excitment and intensity that a live performance can have. This was sloppy and uninspiring- to me anyway.
