A fascinating look back at the flowering of a genre — and a superstar DJ.
2002 | Label: Hypnotic Records - Cleopatra / The Orchard

If we're being honest, A Voyage into Trance should instead be titled A Voyage into Goa Trance. Paul Oakenfold made his name as a superstar DJ by popularizing the Goa strain of trance music across Europe in the mid '90s, helped in no large part by this release, originally released in 1995. Goa is a state on the west coast of India and, as you might expect, its dance music iteration tends to feature tribal drum patterns and aims for transcendence. Oakenfold frequently staves off lengthy climaxes, however, waiting for the last third of the mix before letting some of the tracks play out in their entirety. While this might not be the style of trance that most modern audiences are used to, it's a fascinating look back at the flowering of a genre — and a DJ.

So So

These all sound like covers of Astral Projection tracks. Okay but not spectacular.

Great 90's era electronic dance music! Very motivating for workouts! The mixing by Paul Oakenfold exceeds that of the other version of this collection.

Have this and many more dragonfly albums on vinyl still but for the price worth a download- certainly Oakenfold may have played these out but the guy behind the label is 'Youth' from good ole Killing Joke who obviously loved the Goa scene back then- they cross over with another label Blue Room which belts out quality trance incl tristan/man with no name/manmademan/montauk p/x-dream- the list is expansive- Thanks Emusic for buying quality back catalogue :)

Yay!

Oakenfold does it again! Highly recommended. But, the tracks are all in mono! I downloaded the first 11 tracks ages ago, then discovered I had missed the last one (doh) and got that from the other version here - sounds much better. http://www.emusic.com/album/10875/10875966.html under the moniker A Voyage Into Trance Mixed By Paul Oakenfold I'll have to redownload everything again, unless emusic is really nice...

Set the standard

Monteblan

Released in about '94 to very little fanfair, this was the start of Paul Oakenfolds love affair with the Goa Trance sound that was so heavy in many of his sets. Pre superstar DJ, this mix is just great trance record after great trance record - the better ones being in the latter half of the CD. The final 4 tracks are worth the mix alone. Highly recommended if you want 60 mins of trippy bliss, perfect for that city walk on the headphones or hammering it at home. Tough to find on CD or vinyl, download this up and you wont be dissapointed.

This is a great collection! Some of the songs have a cool beat to them. Theses are the songs I would play at a rave! (I just wish I could go to one..never been invited...sigh) Happy listening!~
