An 80s Gem

SambistaSoul

14 years after their debut album, Rex and Neal delivered a stellar album from beginning to end. The lyrics, melodies, and harmonies combine rock and folk sensibilities with a myriad of "Americana" themes. Fowlers lyrics and vocals are fantastic on songs such as "I'm the One," "Really Gone" (Great Sade Reference), and "Velvet Elvis." Shulman's guitar work shines on "The River," as well as his own clever tune "Girl on MTV." The catchy and well-written title track, which was ignored by the mainstream airwaves and press, could certainly be considered an accurate depiction of US society of the 1980s. My only minor complaint is that the initial sound quality of this album has always been substandard, and that major remastering needs to be done for an album of this quality.

They Say All Media Guide

Fourteen years into their record-making career and a decade after their sole chart appearance, Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman continue to strum their acoustic guitars, share their tenor harmonies, and comment on the modern world in their gentle, folkie way. They pledge their love to MTV VJ Martha Quinn, they pay tribute to Elvis and John Lennon, they make fun of reggae — they are so uncool! But then, their charm lies in their well-meaning clunkiness, as when, in their big anthem, “Living in America,” they salute “the so-called kooks/Known as the anti-nukes,” slowing the song down so you can’t miss it. Folk idealism is not dead. – William Ruhlmann
