Les Savy Fav, Go Forth
2003 | Label: Frenchkiss Records / The Orchard

There are two schools of Les Savy Fav fans: those who crush on singer Tim Harrington's charismatic flourishes and distinctive lyrics equally narrative and surreal, and those crushed off after seeing Harrington's pale, naked torso after yet another Jim Morrison imitation at one of the band's concerts. Les Savy Fav's music takes decidedly different forms in the studio and on stage: on their albums, the manic new-wave tracks never quite congeal, yet live, these songs burst with energy as the Brooklyn-via-Rhode Island quartet erupts while the crowd, titillated, ducks for cover.

Instead, Les Savy Fav's albums belong to their ballads, and Go Forth features the sultriest of the slow stuff. "One to Three" sways softly to Seth Jabber's teetering guitar line and drummer Gibb Slife's slowed disco thwaps. Reminiscent of early Built to Spill, its delicacy is nerve-wracking — like watching Of Mice and Men's Lenny handling your newborn. "Adopduction" tells the story of a kidnapped man whose family low-balls the ransom offer, and who subsequently falls in love with his kidnappers, only to have his affection go unrequited. The epic story gets an appropriately epic arrangement, with peaks, valleys and soaring "ooohs" that, in concert, the indie girls in the… read more »

never gets old

elmansufi

this is a must have. these guys don't expect you to like them from the get go... play it as background music for a couple weeks and don't pay too much attention to it. You'll find out soon enough how brilliant it is. But again, if you're already used to les savy, this will be instantly gratifying. GodDAM these guys rock. PLEASE don't miss them live if they come near you, trust me on this one Any description of how insane they are would be an understatement.

Not for me

Drella118

Not my cup of tea at all. It has no soul, no nilihism either, just shouty non-interesting noise. No chaos a la black flag, no adorable sloppiness, no nothing really IMHO

Get this!

staywhereyouare

If these guys are this good in the studio, it makes me want to make a drive halfway across the country to Brooklyn, NY to see their legendary live shows. Extreme? No more so than a picture left on their MySpace fan site--it shows a man's entire forearm tattooed with Les Savy Fav art along with a comment that reads, "This is how much you guys mean to me." Like the Talking Heads--that other legendary band to emerge from the Rhode Island School of Art--these guys inspire cult following craziness.

amazing live + this album grows on you

MargoRed

if you ever get a chance to see these guys live go. they have a lot of energy and the singer is one of the funniest art school grads you'll ever see grace an indie concert. that said, "go forth" takes a while to grow on you, but after a while you can't stop listening. driving, quirky, a slight tinge of emo in a late 90s kind of way. highly recommended.

modest mouse?

This is not anything like modest mouse. At all. Pills and Adoptuction are amazing songs.

Kidding me?

Yeah, It took me a second listen to get into, but this is classic like the tube sock! Almost every song is amazing, you just need it.

One of my favorites of all time

q548625

I've had this album for quite some time and did not really listen to it until recently. It grows on you and gets better with age. "Tragic Monsters" and "Crawling can be beautiful" are good singles to download. Just download the whole thing, if you're not a douche you'll like it.

A big fat Dud

ENIDON

Disco drive is worth downloading the rest of this are Modest Mouse rip offs. The lyrics are lame and the vocals are interesting but nothing new. Considering the pace of this record, I can't imagine anyone acting crazy and jumping around naked in a mud pit with Les Savy Fav as the backdrop. It's incongruent!

Nu-York City Rock

By Yancey Strickler, eMusic Contributor

New York is not just a rock & roll city. It's hip-hop's capital, the land of Gershwin and a jazz playground. In the '70s, as punk rose along the Bowery, rock threatened to break disco's glittering hold on Manhattan for about a millisecond, but then hip-hop eventually grabbed the crown and has yet to let go. If you walk down Broadway on a summer afternoon, it's not guitars you hear pouring from car windows and… more »

They Say All Music Guide

A few albums into their career, Les Savy Fav continue refining their idiosyncrasies and coming to realize their trademark sound. Past albums were often eclectic in terms of style, the band not sure if it wanted to head in more of a punk or emo direction — or perhaps a hybrid of the two. If anything though, Go Forth is consistent in terms of style. Les Savy Fav have come to terms with who they want to be and explore that identity over the course of the album’s 11 songs, which are similar in tone yet different in approach. There’s a particular irony with their music, though. On the one hand, Les Savy Fav have never sounded this sure of themselves and their songs have never been this crafted — surely positive qualities. Yet, on the other hand, the ultimate refined sound that the band has realized sounds inescapably like Fugazi — the guitar tones, the riffs, the singing, the songwriting, the rhythm section, and even the lyrics — even more than on past albums. No one’s going to argue that Fugazi wasn’t an incredibly influential band — the influence of the group was mammoth, particular on Les Savy Fav’s generation. Yet, while it’s a flattering comparison, Les Savy Fav have somewhat stacked the cards against themselves by modeling their sound so closely on Fugazi’s. Ideally, it’s best to avoid comparisons and take Go Forth for what it is: another impressive album for Les Savy Fav. At this point they have worked through their formative stage, and prove themselves capable of delivering a solid album with diverse songwriting and a consistent style. And even if that style sounds derivative and summons the inevitable Dischord comparisons, it’s impressive nonetheless. – Jason Birchmeier
