Great Starter Album

ozreiuosn

This was the first album I heard of their's and I fell instantly in love. I love the synth all through out the album. A few of the tracks bring me back to Zelda 2 oddly enough.

So fun!

This album is so fun! Puts me in a great mood every time. I love the simplicity of the "drums and organ" instrumentation, and the vocal harmonizing and tempo are exquisite! I wouldn't recommend this for everyone, but if you're into some great lo-fi indie, this is where its at!

tried it, didn't like it.

After reading some of the other reviews, I thought I would give this album a try. I really didn't like it after the first listen. After a few more forced attempts, I just had to admit that I found this music annoying. Most of the vocals just seem to have one mode: stacatto and loud. I know some people find their vocals unpolished and refreshing, but I found some songs unlistenable. The organ reminded me too much of pre-programmed Casio songs. Maybe a couple songs might be worth downloading, but I definitely would not recommend purchasing this album.

Wonderful indie duo

FrickyFreshair

This band is indie through and through from the innocent and unprofessional singing style to the gleeful abandon that marks some of their faster material. A cheerful optimism and introspection pervades each lyric and note and there's also a sense of foreboding doubt that they keep in check, but have no problem exposing through their sometimes droll delivery, or maybe I just mistook that for something else, but that's what it seems like. A married couple living happily in the world knows that what they have isn't what a lot of other people have and how is that not tear worthy? It is. Every song is interesting, but the song that really caught my atttention upon first listen from front to back was "An Experiment" listen for it, to find out why I feel this way. I wholeheartedly recommend this release to anyone who enjoys indie rock that's just adorable and rambunctious in equal parts.

They Say All Media Guide

Mates of State are the husband-wife duo of Kori Gardner on keys of various types and Jason Hammel on drums and occasional keys as well. They both sing with innocent gusto, and their charming voices remind one of wonderful indie pop bands like Papas Fritas and Butterglory in the way they intertwine and twist with naïve fervor. They sound like real people singing about real things, and that is kind of exciting. And they don’t use guitars of any kind. And you don’t miss them either! Team Boo is the band’s fullest sounding, most energy-filled record yet. The duo called in Jim Eno of Spoon and John Croslin, who has worked with Spoon also as well as Beulah and the Mates on their first disc, to produce. Together they have concocted a record that leaps out of the speakers with a feeling of manic joy and excitement. Songs like “Fluke,” “Ha Ha,” and “Gotta Get a Problem” dance with the energy of kids and reel with the flush of first love. Every now and then the record slows down the pace and deals with heavier issues like on the stately “Parachutes (Funeral Song)” or “An Experiment,” but even these songs are blessed with killer hooks and Gardner’s and Hammel’s angelic vocals. Team Boo is a record that will make even the staunchest nonbelievers believe in the power of simply played, honest, and energetic pop music again. Listening to Mates of State will clear out any gloom that may be in your system in a flash and replace it with pure sunshine. Heck, Team Boo could be the most innocent, charming, and believable record of 2003. – Tim Sendra
