Rasa, Shelter
2003 | Label: New Earth

With only three albums to their credit, Rasa have quickly become a spiritual force in new age music. Hans Christian (bass, cello, production) and Kim Waters (vocals) continue their fine exploration of the sensual and sacred on Shelter. Rasa's interpretation of traditional material is exceptional. While honoring the spirit of the bhajan on a track like "Jaya Radha," their rendition has an almost Celtic feel to it, sounding more like Clannad than classical Indian, but blessedly free of subversion or cultural plunder. Simply sublime.

A curious efffort!

Legolus

I like to listen to music with an open mind; the rewards greatly outweigh the costs. If you are fond of listening to interesting efforts, go ahead give it a try. I would definitely rate this as an interesting listen but would be very uneasy to classify this eschewing some deeper form Indian religious belief!

Indian music for westerners

bill_bohrer

I tend to agree with the reviewer who says this is Indian music obviously sung by a westerner in a western register. She has a beautiful voice, but the sound is not authentic, and if that's what you're looking for this is not the album for you. It is a pleasing fusion, though.

Drift Along

Kim's vocals are worth the price of admission alone. There may be some minor complaints from traditionalist who claim this album's feel isnt wi authentic enough. However as a New Age Fusion it works perfectly blending Indian with a hint of Celtic.

Subtly Spiced Indian Music

SpunGeneration

There is a reason why some albums are a pick and this one is a prime example of the attributes necessary for a "pick" rating. Blending musical traditions from very different cultures is often a scary and risky experiment. Similar to smashing Atoms in a Super Collider. In the case of "Rasa's" Shelter, a Western European Voice and vocal patterns were used among traditional Indian instruments. Luckily, the result was a harmonic convergence. Recommend tracks 1 "Gauranga Karuna," 3 "Narada Muni," and 8 "Vaishnava Vijnapti."

This is Beautiful Music

KrishnaSweet

Everyone has different musical tastes. It's not right to give insulting reviews. It says below the Submit button "be courteous and respectful." If anyone has inclinations towards the higher realms of cosmic energies, then the mind and soul will find soothing peace and joy in these Vaishnava bhajans.

Pretty Awful

Susan.Malcolm-Smith

If you like the unique character of Indian music, avoid this at all costs. The vocalist has a beautiful voice suited for celtic tunes, but here she is singing in the wrong tonal register - western NOT Indian - and it jars.

Soothing, a good friend during my trip to my office, makes me want to take the longer path just to hear all the tracks :)
