Zanes at Sea

Bad-Thoughts

So often kid's music is rated for its functionality: how well our sons and daughters respond to them. I downloaded this one for myself, and found that my son loves it. This album sits in familiar Dan Zanes territory, although more directly "folky, rather than traditionally maritime or eclectic (as other Zanes albums). The songs are great--laziness, boredom, adventure--and perhaps that's why they appeal to kids. "Cape Cod Girls", in particular, is a fun track.

This album is a must for any ernest folk collection!! It is so lovable and charming--there is nothing I've heard that inspires me more to play music. If you like it, I highly recommend buying the physical CD, since the album art contains great stories about each song, as well as the lyrics with chords annotated above lines!

well worth it

My son (5 years old when we got this) loved this CD (and all of Dan Zane's stuff). But don't think this is just a children's album: Dan's got the knack for a just-good-enough production quality and a balance between seriousness and fun that makes his albums a treat to listen to for adults and children alike. Put Barney and Raffi on the backshelf and spin some tunes that are sincere and heartfelt enough to listen to over and over and over again.

They Say All Media Guide

Former Del Fuegos frontman Dan Zanes continues his homespun children’s folk series with a set of shanties and other nautical delights on the appropriately titled Sea Music. In the grand tradition of briny stalwarts like Ewan MacColl, Paul Clayton, and A.L. Lloyd, Zanes keeps things simple, employing a small folk ensemble and chorus that allow the songs the infinite headroom that their menial subject matter requires. As expected, there’s an underlying sense of whimsy that caters to the younger crowd, but Zanes seems genuinely inspired by the genre, offering heartfelt renditions of classics like “Shenandoah” and “Mingulay Boat Song” with a deep historical reverence. The performances are raw and authentic — they were recorded in his kitchen — and the instrumentation flirts with country, blues, and British folk with grace and humor. The Smithsonian Folkways-style packaging and extensive liner notes convey his passion for preservation, providing everything from chord changes to recommended recordings for further study, but it’s the earthy enthusiasm that bubbles up beneath work songs like “Cape Cod Girls” and “Blow Ye Winds in the Morning” that resonates the deepest. Sea Music is quietly bombastic, thoroughly charming, and surprisingly authentic, especially when the quintessential drunk sailor song, “All for Me Grog,” is led by an 11-year-old. – James Christopher Monger
