Bruach

Everytime I come across an album that I want to download. Guess what? It gets a bit frustrating after a while.

Moving

Jaygo

The production is tight, which lets the strength of each track come blazing through. Yes, beautiful. Full of style, grace and musicianship, this is one of my top-ten world albums. If you like African music, just download it; if you're not sure, download tracks 5 & 11 and see what you think.

Bow to the King and Queen of Malian pop

Lucyland

Yet another amazing group to emerge from Mali. When a friend turned me on to Sou Ni Tile a few years back it immediately became a cherished favorite. They ROCK WAY OUT, sing loving songs to each other (usually written by Mariam -- C'est la Vie), lament about being the downtrodden, or stand up tall for the Dogons (talk about a kick ass song!) Thanks to an assorted Int'l crew of musicians and producers one can easily to listen to the same song twice and discover yet another texture weaving around Amadou's big, rich guitar. (They also put on a fab live show.) Immediate downloading is highly recommended...!

Beautiful

Amadou et Mariam are incredible - this album is well worth downloading. They mix Amercan blues and traditional Malian rhythms, with french and bambara language lyrics. It's all produced in Paris, very high quality, not the crappy tape-sounding stuff some low-budget African artists produce. This is absolutely first rate. I've seen them perform twice and they're awesome. For reference, I like mostly punk/techno/jamband stuff, so this was a departure to me - and opened up a whole new adventure for me, exploring world music. I can't say enough good things about A&M, except that aside from Wasis Diop, they are my favorite world music artists.

They Say All Media Guide

Mali’s Amadou & Mariam sing in three African languages and French but more importantly are fluent in a musical language that often transcends ordinary speech. Polyrhythmic percussion, complex vocal harmonies, and fluid guitar, violin, and horn lines — as well as the occasional harmonica — are combined to create earthy songs that are more given the breath of life than performed. Each of the album’s 15 songs beats with its own human, living pulse. “A Radio Mogo” hints at Caribbean reggae, while “Mon Amour, Ma Cherie” allows Amadou to stretch out a bit on guitar, over a rolling, throbbing beat. While not as blues-oriented as the more internationally known Malian guitarists, Ali Farka Toure and Boubacar Traore, Amadou plays guitar in an accomplished, heartfelt style that’s accessible in any language. In Sou Ni Tile, Amadou & Mariam and their band have created mature, intelligent pop music that’s accessible exactly because the musicians have chosen not to trade exuberance or passion for their maturity and intelligence. – Brian Beatty
