Hello Old Friend

Mach1Tim

I too was one of those New Years Eve revelers who rocked in the new year with Jerry. Probably no less than 10 times in the 70's and 80's, we packed the revolving Celebrity Theater in Phoenix to the unmistakeable sounds of " Riopelle " the Double Shuffle Band and the unmistakeable scents of the pot being smoked in the house. There was no doubt that there was a party going on when Jerry broke into his ever popular "Lets Get Loaded", or "Red Ball Texas Flyer" songs, and probably not a dry eye in the house when he backed them up with "Talk to Me". Its too bad that my adulthood has kept me away from one my favorite artists for a while and I surely missed hearing Jerry, but after listening to Tongue and Groove, it feels just like old times again. Thanks Jerry you still sound great......... hey, lets get loaded like we used to do !

Long time underrated artist

Featlike

Riopelle began as a protégé of Phil Spector’s, producing Bonnie and the Treasures and playing on such artists as Righteous Brothers, etc. He has around 13 albums to his catalogue, most of them independant releases, and has a huge following in the southwest. The mainstream’s long disregard of him is criminal. His New Year’s concerts in Phoenix thru the 70s, 80s, & 90s are still legendary. Riopelle’s longstanding song craft is well represented on Tongue N Groove, his most diverse album to date (I have every album). “Kill Me”, the kind of song he is revered for, is a new classic as well as "Walk In The Jungle." “Talk To Me” is a remake of a bonafide Riopelle classic. See his website @ www.jerryriopelle.com for clips of his previous stuff. And keep your eye open for the forthcoming 4 CD anthology. One of the great unknown artists.

This artist left the L.A. area and was living in Hawaii at the time of this release, and this disc does have a distinct island tinge to the back porch, Detroit-influenced, straight-ahead rock & roll. He is one of those artists who have never made it big except in small pockets located throughout the world — places such as Arizona, Michigan, and the Netherlands. This is an extremely talented songwriter and singer who can sing with the soul of a Van Morrison (listen to the brooding intensity of “Kill Me”). He can rock with the likes of a Mitch Rider (lend an ear to “Bad Boys Ride”). His songs have been covered by the likes of Jim Messina, Stuart Margolin, and, of course, Kenny Loggins with his hit rendition of “Easy Rider.” His songs touch the heart and deal with the problems of relationships, love, and life. This disc is an exploration of differing rhythms. It ventures from the island rhythms of “A Walk in the Jungle” to the flamenco groove of “Flamenco Café,” stopping off at many other spots to see what shakes out. It all works well together. The song you may find yourself coming back to is the beautiful song about truth in relationships and how to make them work, “Talk to Me.” This is one of those gems that you never heard of, and it’s a hard to find disc that will be well worth your search. – Bob Gottlieb
