Beat Happening meets MBV

EMUSIC-0080B6DA

Here's a chance of achieving indie rock cool: I knew them first... An astonishing album from a bunch of former teenagers who used to post their 4-track stuff on mp3.com. This is a true recorded-in-the-basement album as known from GBV and Smog, but it is really what indie rock should be all about: Preserving the artist's vision instead of replacing it with that of some stupid producer - so uncommon in an age where most indie rock sound bland and conformist. Super beautiful yet angular songs full of the kind of bitter-sweet romanticism that can only evoke from the very young. Somewhere between MBV, Drop Nineteens, Beat Happening and Marine Girls.

They Say All Media Guide

Minneapolis indie pop darlings Kloey shine on 2002′s After School Special. The disc’s 15 songs radiate with a positive glow. This was their second full-length release, and was full of brief, sweet pop songs. After School Special served as an impressive follow-up to their debut Hello, My Name Is Kloey. College radio in the Midwest took note of songs like “Gotta Gotta” and “Blue.” Bubblegum harmonies throughout the album make it surprising that Kloey never caught on more than they did. Vocalist/guitarist Cindy Iverson and vocalist/bassist Robbie Sutter carried the songs, and drummer Reed Sutter showcased his talents as a producer. The disc was released on their own Nucleargopher Records. – Stephen Cramer
