No missed step

The Sea and Cake grabs you by the ear lobe -- Aunt B style -- from the first chord of "The Sporting Life." And it doesn't let up.

their most important record?

Axiom

I was lucky enough to come across this album soon after its release and it had a major impact - defining a new direction for my musical exploration and enjoyment. Not every song is a masterpiece, but every song is worth listening to and the album as a whole is, in my opinion, the S&Cs most complete and cohesive.

Get "There You Are" and "Bird and Flag" then move onto newer albums (only a few on eMusic).

unusual songwriting

xmasthecat

I hooked onto this album when it came out because of a combination of the sound and interesting songwriting. Not all but many of the songs have something unusual about how they're put together, and go past being well-made pop songs to evoking vivid emotion. My favorites are 1, 2, 3, 6, and 8.

Among the best works of Sea and Cake

Tinoco

Soothing and inovative. Really worth the download. One can never get enough of this band. "Rossignol" reminds me of my honeymoon skiing in Chile...

this is unprecedented!

e-strings

You will never hear music like this anywhere else. This album is the best of their electronica dabbling/incorporation that they delved into on their last three albums. This is delicately crafted music which pays an amazing amount of attention to detail. This should be heard.

They Say All Media Guide

The product of an uncharacteristically long two-year layoff, The Fawn is the Sea and Cake’s most experimental effort to date; the influence which the electronica movement exerts over the record is substantial — drum machines, sequencer tones, and synths are dominant throughout, and the group even dabbles in dub textures and sampling techniques. What’s remarkable about songs like “Sporting Life” and “The Argument,” however, is that the addition of electronics never upsets the music’s delicate chemistry — as is again proven here, the Sea and Cake’s greatest gift is their ability to assimilate the breadth of their inspirations, no matter how far afield, to emerge with something new and distinctive each time out; impressive in scope and rich in detail, The Fawn is as seamless and sophisticated as ever. – Jason Ankeny
