Incredible

Kyuzo

No - not everyone will like this. But then not everyone thought Hitler was a nutter. Simple formula: carefully select the most banging/soulful/jazzy loops, add crunchy beats, cut it up and your done. Kicks the ass of most of the r&b-hop that is doing the rounds in the charts. Keeping all the rough edges keeps the tracks spontaneous and raw - hip hop in the form it started with and what will keep it alive.

Solid Instrumentals

LeaseDef

For anyone who doesn't know, the Special Herbs collections are the instrumental versions of tracks which MF Doom has produced for various projects. There are beats on here from Take Me To Your Leader, Mm Food, and some other stuff that I don't recognize off of the top of my head. They're good solid instrumental tracks utilizing good layering of sounds and the chunky sort of beats for which Doom is known. However, they're not so lush that they stand completely on their own. So, if you're looking for something to just sit and listen to, this is not the album for you. Go get some of Doom's tracks with rapping on them such as Operation Doomsday or King Geedorah - Take Me To Your Leader. But if you want some good instrumental tracks to freestyle over, then this is a good selection. It also can serve as ambient music with a hip hop feel if you need such.

You have to be joking

Edwina

I have obviously missed something here. Over-long tunes with very few ideas, played out on a Casio Tonebank over amateurish beatboxing. There must be something very understated and sophisticated going on that has passed me by. Put this on with a few friends round and you'll soon be trying to justify why it's acceptable. Sorry, but I don't get it. I highly recommend you download one or two to see if it is to your taste before taking on the whole album.
