It would be nice to have more JF on e-music

Bantamman1

But if this is all we can get then there is good stuff here Try Put her in the movies and progress from there if you like. If you haven’t already then get the Grays album on which JF appears.

ah fiddlesticks on the negative reviews

take it from this huge Falkner fan - these songs would fit just fine on "..Presents Author Unknown" or "Can You Still Feel"

falkner doing what he does best

MICA

I'm just a Jason Falkner fan - and while this isn't mindblowing or anything new - it pleases me greatly! They Put Her in the Movies really stands out - jason Falkner doing pop as no other!

uninviting

I was pumped for new JF. This didn't do it for me the way Nigel Godrich's glistening production did on Can You Still Feel? I bought this as soon as I could get my hands on the CD and within weeks traded it away on lala. The lyrics tend toward goofy and forgettable, and the guitar work isn't too inspired. Tepid, MOR pop.

Nah.

Much of Jason Falkner's work is moving, inventive, haunting, classic. Bliss Descending is none of those. The vocals lack conviction and the lyrics abound with cliches. A real disappointment from a stellar songwriter.

Deserves to be heard!

Falkner's career dates back to the '80s when he performed with Jellyfish and recorded with Jon Brion in The Grays before signing with a major label as a solo act. In the late '90s, he cut two brilliant but overlooked guitar-pop albums, and issued this superb EP in 2004. He has also done session work with Beck, Paul McCartney and Air. In the spring of 2007 he cut a full-length album on a Japanese label. Why isn't he better known in the West?--go figure... His music is kind a bit retro, with strong, intelligent lyrics ann melodies with hooks. But hey--the Beatles were like that too. Enjoy!

Falkner's back in a big way

DJMc

Apparently Jason Falkner liked Can You Still Feel? as little as I did, because he's gone back to the perfect pop songs of his first solo album with Bliss Descending. My favorite track is "They Put Her In the Movies", a very modern sounding synth-pop song, which is a little surprising, but I'm not complaining. This is one of the little known gems of emusic, if you've found it, get it!

Jason Falkner’s Bliss Descending EP marks the end of a five-year wait for more powerful pop from one of the leading figures on the guitar pop scene. Oh, he’s been busy with various projects but this is the first release under his name. From the sound of it, the EP could have been recorded the week after 1999′s Can You Still Feel? It has the same hook-happy songcraft, clean but not slick production, and vocal purity. The only thing slightly different is a bit more reliance of synthesizers (as on “They Put Her in the Movies”). All five songs would have sounded great on an album, no filler to be found. Best of the batch are the textured ballad (handclaps, harpsichord, rich vocal harmonies and swirling synths) “Moving Up,” and the hard-charging rocker “The Neighbor.” “Lost Myself” is pretty swell too with dynamic shifts and a super dreamy chorus. Really, the whole EP is on par with the high quality of all of Falkner’s work. The only downside is that this isn’t the way overdue full-length record. Then again at least we Falkner fanatics have this EP to wave over our heads like the flag of the pop underground nation. That’s fine consolation. – Tim Sendra
