James always took advantage of what was going on at the time, like the hotpants fad. On tunes like "Cold Sweat" and "I Got the Feelin'," those rhythms and the way they combined with the horns, he just had it down. One of his great ballads that dominated the airwaves was "It's a Man's World" — it's a minor key thing on the piano, and another tune that glorifies the woman. The world would be nothing without a woman or a girl. James always knew the right things to say. On "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" he was saying he's got something new — whatever he does the best, well, now he's got a brand new one. That was one of the great things about James, was that he kept evolving. My daughter sang with James for six years. She would always tell me she learned a lot from Mr. Brown. He had such command, especially live — when he'd play, people went crazy. That's what you hear on these tunes.

Yep - refrain from buying this, as EMusic should not have sold this without a fair warning. My first walkman recorder better. Pity.

Tracks cut short

rorymccloskey

Very disappointing, he is just getting into it when many of the tracks fade out. Don't know what version Isaac Hayes was listening to when he recommended it but it wasn't this one.

Bad Audio

BustaNutt

The performance is nothing short of amazing. There is a video of this performance that is definitely worth seeing. This is arguably one of the tightest band on the planet. HOWEVER, on this version, the audio levels clip rather nastily and makes this pretty much unlistenable. This album should be ripped again and, this time, properly.

feels good

Even though the sound is not ideal, a simple room mic more than captures the energy you could expect from the godfather.

James Brown/seventh wonder

stick with the older albums/cd's. you need more of James Brown older sounds and not live it doesn't sound the same.

You've heard this before

Jazz13man

This is mid-eighties JB with the Soul G's, just before Living in America from the sounds of it - get a copy of the Live in London video, everything is the same. Those shows were outstanding, notable for the longer tunes like SuperBad and Sex Machine, but here we mostly just get the quick short shots. Can't get enough JB though...

terrible sound

James Brown is at the top of his game here but the sound quality is so awful I can't recommend it.
